Appearance of "Vamanadeva" the Avatar of Lord Visnu.

Today is the appearance of "Vamanadeva" the Avatar of Lord Visnu who asked from the great King Bali just three paces of land, and when Bali agreed Vamanadeva expanded to be as tall as the universe which could not accommodate his steps, and so, frustrated in fulfilling the request, King Bali surrendered to the Lord.

His name "Vamana" is debated with one explanation being how "Vamana" means to "vomit" as in the presence of "Vamanadeva" King Bali was inspired to "vomit" the instructions given to him by Sukracarya, the guru of the Asuras who could see that "Vamanadeva" was Visnu Himself who was going to take everything away from King Bali.

The other explanation for "Vamana" is "dwarf" though this may simply be by association just as "Krsna" by association means "black". Another name for "Vamanadeva" is "Trivikrama" which means "one who covered the universe in three ( tri ) steps ( vikrama )".
